I love bucket lists. Obviously. I make a bucket list for just about everything. Really, they are just lists. I had a lot of things that I have in mind for activities this summer, but I thought it would be best to go ahead and just write it all down! After all, making a list holds you accountable, and helps you see what is realistic and what isn’t.
If you want a comprehensive Austin Bucket List, check this one out by Do512! It has a little of everything! Activities, food, bars, you name it!
Obviously, there is ALWAYS something to do in Austin, but there are a few specific things that I want to do in the summer! Kayaking, for example. Do-able all year round (because basically winter isn’t a thing here) but probably best in the summer. Also – let me be clear on my time frame here. Summer lasts WELL through August here in Texas, so I’m making the “end” of summer going to be mid to late September. I mean, let’s be real. Even October and November are pretty warm here.
*Disclaimer: All pictures in this post are NOT MINE because I haven’t done any of these things yet. I put sources for all pictures used and will do a post at the end of the summer with all the stuff I did!
Visit Deep Eddy Distillery in Dripping Springs

OJ and I have been dying to go to this place for a long long time. Funny story, we actually booked tickets to go last summer, and we accidentally showed up for our tour on a wrong day! We had booked a tour where they send a bus to pick you up downtown and we had booked Sunday and showed up at the bus stop on Saturday….so we canceled it and swore we’d go in a couple weeks. A year later, we still haven’t gone! I want to go this year for sure.
Go to the Cathedral of Junk in South Austin
Source: [Nomadic Matt]
I’ve lived in Austin for 6 1/2 years, and I haven’t been to this “cathedral of junk” yet. I mean, it’s literally just junk. Giant piles of junk. So for a long time, it didn’t seem worth it to go. All of a sudden though, I have this burning desire to go see what this pile is all about that has dragged tourists there for years! I have a fancy new camera now, so I thought maybe I’d get some artsy shots.
Kayak on Ladybird Lake
I mentioned this earlier. Kayaking on Ladybird Lake. Literally every summer, I say “Oh my gosh, we should go kayaking!” …. and then I never do it. I drive by the lake every Saturday and Sunday and I see all these kayakers on the lake and it just looks glorious. I WILL do it this summer. You guys have to hold me accountable! All 8 of my readers. Hold me accountable.
Updated: We went kayaking yesterday, and let me tell you. Kayaking is not for the faint hearted, and kayaking with your significant other AND a dog…they should really hand out coupons for couple’s therapy at the docks. Looking back it was a lot of fun, but at the time it involved a lot of yelling, tired arms, and a dog constantly trying to jump out of the kayak!! I would do it again, though. There’s nothing that beats that view of the city!
Visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Source: [Wildflower Center]
Just recently, my roommate and his girlfriend went to the wildflower center and the pictures they came back with looked like they had just come back from Spain (which coincidentally they did, two months ago). So OBVIOUSLY I have to hit it up and get some great pictures!
Swim at Barton Springs AND Deep Eddy Pool
These are two more places that I have neglected to visit since I moved here 6 1/2 years ago. I’ve actually been to Barton Springs several times as a kid when I used to visit my grandma. However, I haven’t been back since I moved here! I’ve gotta hit up some of the more popular pools in Austin! It’s my duty as a citizen.
Do a Brewery Tour
Source: [ABW Facebook]
This is another one of those things that you can really do anytime, but it will be more enjoyable during the summer. Is there anything better than getting an ice cold beer on a hot summer day? I don’t think so. I am a brand new beer drinker so I only like certain kinds, but I am trying to branch out! I got acclimated to wine by doing wine tastings so I would love to taste new beers at some really cool breweries in town! There are so many in town, I’m not even sure where we’ll go. Apparently, if you book through ATXCursions, you can go see multiple in one day!
Visit the Famous HOPE Outdoor Gallery
The HOPE Outdoor Gallery has been a place in Austin for artists to tag for years. It is a place where all graffiti is allowed, and anyone and everyone can do it (actually, I believe they encourage ONLY artists to do it, but if you think I’m not bringing a can of spray paint…you’re wrong)! It is a really cool concept, and it has a great view of Austin! This is yet another thing that I haven’t done since I moved here, that I MUST do!
Drive to Jacob’s Well in Wimberly
Source: [Hays Co.]
I recently stumbled upon this on Pinterest. I had no idea it even existed, and it is less than an hour away from me! I texted OJ about it this morning and already booked our day to go out there. They try to limit the visitors to 300 people a day, with reservations in advance, in 2-hour increments. It is a really cool swimming hole, and I am so excited to go see it!
So there you have it. My summer bucket list! Comment below with any ideas you think I should add to my bucket list. What’s on YOUR summer bucket list? I want to hear about it!
